About NRCT

HISTORY BACKGROUND

The Nepal River Conservation Trust (NRCT) is a non-profit organization founded in 1995 by a group of concerned river guides who recognized the alarming ecological and cultural damage occurring to Nepal’s rivers.

Since its establishment, NRCT has been dedicated to conserving Nepal’s Himalayan river system, preserving the country’s rich cultural heritage, and fostering an environmentally responsible river tourism industry. The NRCT organizes the Annual River Festival and the Bagmati River Festival to raise awareness among river users about the critical need for conservation, while promoting the development of an economically and environmentally sustainable river tourism sector.

Nepal’s Himalayan rivers are not only vital to local communities but also serve as international attractions. However, their survival is increasingly threatened by damming and other harmful environmental practices. NRCT’s efforts aim to protect these precious rivers for future generations and ensure their continued role in both cultural and ecological well-being.
